K-9 Unit Visit 2017

On 1st of June 2017, our unit attended the K-9 Unit Visit. Here is the reflection from members of our Secondary Two squad:

The K-9 Unit Visit was an enriching experience which allowed us to step out of our comfort zone. Even though both of us had a fear of dogs, we decided to sign up for the visit and make use of the opportunity to overcome our fears.

When we first arrived at the Singapore Police Force k-9 Unit, we we hesitant and doubtful about the visit. We feared that there would be dogs running loose once they were released, and would come after us. However, we soon settled down to watch a demonstration of the police dogs’ skills and how they were trained. We were awed at how agile and smart the dogs were once the act started. Even though these dogs were huge, they were very well trained and adorable. It was really different from what we had expected.

After that, we were allowed to touch and take pictures with past police dogs. We were initially scared and unwilling to shake off our fears and decided to stick to the sides away from the dogs, but we eventually felt safe enough to go near them. It was fun to pet and take pictures with the dogs. They were obedient and did not attempt to chase or bite anybody, even when a trainer placed his arm at one of the dog’s mouth. We felt that it was interesting to not only see how the dogs train, but also to interact with them up close.

Overall, the K-9 Unit visit was a new and pleasant experience. Although we were fearful about the huge police dogs at the start, we felt more comfortable after a while. It was definitely enjoyable watching demonstrations of the dogs sniffing out substances found in explosives, and attacking one of the trainers who acted as bait. We were glad that we signed up for the visit as we gained more insight into the SPF K-9 Unit and were able to be more comfortable around dogs.
